Road Accident.

Most people in Ghana use the road as means of transportation but accidents do happen on these roads. Road accident is identified as one of the major causes of death and statistics have proven that it is the second major cause of death following malaria because an average of sis deaths are recorded every day in Ghana. Road accidents are categorized by the National Road Safety Commission as fatal, serious and minor bases on the damages on human lives and properties but most of the root cases of these accidents have been associated with human errors and superstition.
Researchers like Ayeboo in the year 2009 and Ocansey in the year 2011 have been able to come up with some causes of road accidents as well as the National Road Safety Commission in the year 2007 which includes machine failure, overloading, wrong overtaking, poor road network, intoxication, poor vision of drivers among others. However road accidents have been linked to one or combination of these factors; Equipment failure, Roadway design, Poor roadway maintenance and most especially Drivers' behavior.
The inability of a car to function as designed and made by the manufacture to meet  the safety standards of the user can be termed as Equipment failure. Most equipment failure can be cited in loss of brake, tire blowouts and steering failure. Roadway design as mostly blamed by motorists for accidents is rarely the cause of road accidents. Poor maintenance  of roads also contribute to road accidents but not to the extent that driver use them as excuses. Potholes, faded road signs, poor road construction and debris on roads are all examples of poor maintenance.
The attitude and behavior of drivers contribute to a greater percentage of road accidents and as humans we tend to  blame someone or something else for the mistakes we commit. Most Drivers who get involved in accidents believe that the other party could have done something to prevent the accident but just a few accept they are at fault. Some accidents occur when the drivers is distracted by a cell phone call or depressed and some drivers increase the normal speed on road just to get to their destination on time or get as many passengers as possible and make more than their daily sales as in the case of commercial drivers.
Strategies should be taken to eliminate corruption at the Driver and Vehicle Licence Authority to ensure that the right thing is done, that is ensuring of driving licence to people who have not gone through driving tests as well as issuing false licence. Drivers should also be checked by passengers when they are over speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol, Laws should be enforced to make sure commercial and private drivers go through proper training before getting their licence and also the police should make sure that damaged vehicles are towed off the streets.
The resources of the Ghana lies in the people and the earlier these measures are taken the safer our nation will be and production time will be saved.
